Florence and Machine Digipak

  • Both images of Florence are media close ups. They make her look unique and allow the person look at them to see more than just the artist.
  • The shot on the front cover is composited to so that Florence is centrally frames so the text could line up with her lungs. It also means that she is the first thing people look at when they pick up the album. The background of the cover almost seems to be irrelevant as the image of Florence draws the eye away from it. The image on the inside cover has Florence naked but covered up. It appeals to the male gaze as they can use their imagination. She is framed on the right side of the image making her seem more vulnerable in the grid rule of images. Her facial expression, however, suggest determination or strength. Like her undressed state doesn't hold her back. Her position also relates to the album as she is covering her lungs unlike the first image
  • Over all there are 4 images including the one on the disc. They all directly relate to the title of the album as they are literally lungs or, as in the case of the inside cover, her lungs are covered.
  • It fits with genre conventions as the sepia filter is a common in rock albums such as the The Killers. The colours are also associated with the genre. There is less emphasis on her makeup and clothing which like most albums in the genre.
  • In this digipak the integration of text to images has the images at more than the text unlike the other two digipaks that I have looked at. There is an image on every page on the digipak. Text is only used when its needed rather than filling up every blank space on the digipak. The majority of the text it situated on the back cover of the album.
  • The font is place around the images apart form the front cover and disc. On the front cover the word "lungs" is used literally to cover the lungs to cement the imagery. On the back cover its smaller and situated under the diagram of the lungs so that it isn't obstructed.
  • The colours all vary from cover to cover. As the photograph of Florence takes up most of the front cover the colours are mostly dull. The image on the inside cover has a filter over it so its mostly one colour. The only common colour is black as it features in some shape or form on all of the covers. The back of the album is sold black to make the white image and text standout. The font on this album differs on ever page. The name of the band is it a very different font from the rest of it make it standout more and as its the brand that they are trying to sell. "Lungs" is in a more block-like text while the smaller text on the back it thinner so that more of it can fit on the back.
  • I can't pick out a clear theme from this album apart from the consistent use of lungs as its the title of the album.
  • The lighting it high key.
